Karen is a wine educator, entrepreneur, and founder of Inspired Somm, a modern wine education platform created to make wine more approachable, entertaining, and relevant to today’s wine enthusiasts. Founded in 2018, Inspired Somm reflects Karen’s philosophy that wine education should be informative without being intimidating—and that learning about wine should be just as enjoyable as drinking it.

With a background in global marketing and an MBA from the University of California, Irvine, Karen brings a unique business and storytelling perspective to wine education. Her professional experience spans more than 20 years, including leadership roles in the technology industry and work across global markets. She has also traveled and worked in more than 60 countries, experiences that have deepened her appreciation for the relationship between wine, food, culture, and travel.

Karen’s approach to wine is unpretentious, interactive, and designed for the modern wine enthusiast. Through Inspired Somm, she introduces guests to wine through tastings, educational experiences, food pairings, and approachable conversations that help take the intimidation out of wine. Her goal is not simply to teach people how to taste wine, but to help them understand why they like what they like.

Her passion for wine also led to the creation of Inspired Vineyards in 2021, a collection of art-inspired wines produced in Napa Valley. Each wine label features a varnished print of one of Karen’s original paintings, connecting her two creative passions—art and wine. The collection includes Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Rosé.

As the founder of Inspired Art Wine, a Costa Mesa art studio, wine bar, and gallery, Karen has helped introduce tens of thousands of guests to the world of art and wine since 2016. Her broader mission across her ventures is simple: educate, entertain, and inspire.

Karen brings a uniquely global perspective to wine education, shaped by her travels and work across more than 60 countries. Her experiences around the world have exposed her to an incredible diversity of cultures, cuisines, traditions, and approaches to hospitality—experiences that continue to influence the way she teaches wine today.

For Karen, wine is much more than what is in the glass. It is a reflection of place, culture, history, food, and people. Traveling has allowed her to experience firsthand how different cultures gather around the table, pair wine with local cuisine, celebrate with wine, and develop their own relationship with what they drink.

That global perspective allows Karen to make wine education more relatable and experiential. Instead of simply memorizing appellations or tasting notes, she encourages guests to understand the story behind the wine—where it comes from, what makes the region unique, how its culture influences its food and wine traditions, and why those elements matter in the glass.

Her travels have also taught her that there is no single “right” way to enjoy wine. Wine preferences are personal, and cultural experiences often shape those preferences. Karen uses that philosophy to make wine education approachable rather than intimidating, helping people develop confidence in identifying what they enjoy and understanding why.

Ultimately, Karen sees wine as a passport to the world. Every bottle has a place, a story, and a culture behind it—and her role as an educator is to help people discover that story while enjoying the journey.
